What's actually happening.

An account that isn't yours. A late payment you didn't make. A balance that's flat wrong. A collection that should have aged off years ago. Errors on credit reports are common, and they cost you real money in higher rates and denials. The Fair Credit Reporting Act gives you the right to dispute inaccurate information and force the bureau to investigate. Most people never send the letter.

What we draft.

Sample excerpt

I am writing to dispute the following item on my credit report under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, 15 U.S.C. § 1681i. Disputed item: [Creditor name], account ending [ACCOUNT NUMBER]. Your report shows this account as delinquent. This is inaccurate — the account was paid on time, as the enclosed documentation shows. I request a reasonable reinvestigation of this item, and that it be corrected or deleted. Please notify me of the results of your investigation in writing...

Full letter includes: consumer identification block, each disputed item with furnisher and account number, FCRA §1681i reinvestigation request, correction-or-deletion demand, investigation-window notice, and enclosure list (ID, proof of address, supporting documents).

Laws we cite.

We ground every letter in real statutes and regulations. Here's what applies to your situation:

15 U.S.C. § 1681i

Fair Credit Reporting Act §611 — your right to dispute inaccurate or incomplete information and require the bureau to conduct a reasonable reinvestigation.

FCRA reporting limits

Most negative items are subject to the 7-year reporting limit — items past it should have aged off your report.

FCRA investigation window

The FCRA provides an approximately 30-day window for the bureau to investigate your dispute and report the results to you in writing.

Who this isn't for.

We're honest about our limits. FightThis may not be right if:

  • The item is accurate but negative — a dispute corrects errors; it can't remove truthful information.
  • You want ongoing credit repair or score-improvement services — we draft one formal dispute letter, not a subscription program.
  • You're in active litigation over the account — you need an attorney for that.
  • You want to dispute a charge with your card issuer — that's a Fair Credit Billing Act dispute, which we also support.

If your situation is high-stakes, please find a local attorney. Many state bars have free or low-cost referral services.

Common questions.

Which bureau do I send this to?

The one whose report shows the error — Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion. If the same error appears on more than one report, each bureau needs its own dispute. Our letter is addressed to the specific bureau you select.

How long does the bureau have to respond?

The FCRA provides an approximately 30-day investigation window, and the bureau must notify you of the results of its investigation in writing. Our letter notes that window explicitly.

What should I include with the letter?

A copy of your ID and proof of address — bureaus ask for these to verify it's you — plus any documentation supporting your dispute. The letter lists these enclosures for you.

What kinds of errors can I dispute?

An account that isn't yours, a payment reported late that was paid on time, an incorrect balance or status, or an item that should have been removed under the 7-year reporting limit — anything inaccurate or incomplete.

Does disputing mean I'm admitting I owe something?

No. The letter disputes the accuracy of what's being reported. It does not admit any debt is owed and does not concede the item is accurate.

What happens if the bureau agrees the item is wrong?

The letter requests that the item be corrected or deleted, and that the bureau confirm the outcome to you in writing.
